Sometimes we take detours from our well intentioned plans. I was going to create 3 nourishing meals a week for you – and then I went out with a girlfriend to catch up. She excitedly told me how she read the wildly acclaimed book “The life changing magic of tidying up-the Japanese art of decluttering and organizing” by Marie Kondo. A couple other people I know mentioned this book a few months back. My curiosity piqued, I bought and read the book. Not only did I read the book, I put the book’s philosophy into use. Marie Kondo is an organizing consultant in Japan who believes in uncluttering one’s life by categories. She starts with clothes. Bring all clothing items in one area, either the floor or bed. Then hold each item and feel if it brings you joy or not. Well as you can see by my absence, I got obsessed by this. My focus for the past month has been letting go of all items in my living space that no longer bring me joy. Oh the things I learned about myself during the process. I dislike purses/bags that I cannot sling over my body; I cling to the past; bright colors make me smile. I learned what my husband finds important in our space and skirts on a whole do not make me feel sexy. And I find it cumbersome to find the right top to complement those skirts.
I still have one category left and that is my mementoes. The task seems a bit daunting. Thank goodness I have my sister who is also going through the process to be my support. Right now the magic I am experiencing is one of peace and more empty space in my dwelling. This book gave me permission to let go of some long time possessions that were no longer serving me.
To keep up with the theme of life-changing, I would like to introduce you to Sarah Britton’s Life changing bread recipe. This is life changing in the fact that there is no flour in this bread. The bread consists of nuts, seeds, oats and psyillium husks which I found in the supplement section of my local grocery store. This makes for a great breakfast and super afternoon snack with tea.
Just like the aforementioned book this recipe has touched the souls of many. What life changing magic have you experienced lately?
